How to switch carriers and keep your phone number

Switching to a new phone company can save you money, and you can almost always keep the same phone number. The key is doing things in the right order.

Most important: don’t cancel your old service first. Your new carrier moves your number over, and your old account closes automatically when the move is done. If you cancel first, you could lose your number.

Step 1: Check coverage where you live

Every carrier has a coverage map on its website. Type in your home address, and any other place you spend a lot of time, like a family member’s house. A cheap plan isn’t a bargain if calls drop in your kitchen.

Step 2: Check whether your phone is paid off

If you’re still making monthly payments on your phone, you may owe the remaining balance when you leave. Some carriers offer to help pay this off when you switch, so it’s worth asking.

Step 3: Get your account number and transfer PIN

Your new carrier will ask for your current account number and a number transfer PIN. You can usually find both in your current carrier’s app or website, or by calling them. Write them down before you start.

Step 4: Sign up with your new carrier

Choose your new phone or bring your own, pick a plan, and say that you want to keep your existing number. Enter the account number and PIN when asked.

Step 5: Wait for your number to move over

Moving a number is often quick, though it can sometimes take longer. Your old phone will stop working on the old carrier once the move is complete. That’s your sign that it worked.

Step 6: Check your final bill

Keep an eye out for a final bill from your old carrier, and make sure it closes out correctly.
